Voip with Nokia 5630
I played around a bit today with Nokia 5630 and voice over internet. Not because I incidentally got my first phone-bill from Tele2 today, but because I find the concept of making a free call, possibly a video call, from my normal cellphone, absolutely irresistible.
The standard for Voip is called SIP, and to use SIP you need a SIP account. I checked around a bit for different providers until i stumbled upon sipgate.co.uk. They allow you to setup your account directly for no charge and get a free real number to boot. Excellent. After some configuration I finally got the lovely message on my phone. “Account is registered” The sipgate.co.uk webpanel confirmed it. It could see my phone. Rock on! My cellphone was ready to make internet calls.
Or so I thought. The Nokia 5630 even has its own field in the contacts for “internet phone”. But trying to call someone with only an internet phone number didn’t work. It should show up as a third call option. And trying to just hit the call button gives me the error “Internet-telephony service not available.” A flicker of fear awoke inside of me, was it all too good to be true?
And so far.. it was! Here is the response I got from Nokia Support (use babelfish you lazies)
Hej Martin.

Thanks for that horrifying response Nokia, what I would like to know is if that is true, then what the hell is this page on about? Nokia 5630 XpressMusic support Check out the movies surprise ending! Thats right, a SIP call being made without any special program.
I have seen phones being sold where some functionality was just broken or not functioning very well. i hope that the support guy just was mistaken, and that someone in the comments will tell me what an idiot I am. But since is such a new phone I can’t help but wonder. Is Nokia promoting the phone by showing a feature that is not even implemented yet?
Update 17/8
Here is how things stand right now:
- I got a third response from Nokia. I told them that my settings were working fine but that the phone could not place the call. The reply I got was simple. “Your settings are wrong, and we don’t support anything but Gizmo”. To sum up my experience with Nokia support the three mails and two phonecalls I have sent them regarding this have been a waste of time.
- The SIP Supplier sipgate.co.uk told me they would send me a config sms with the correct settings, I haven’t got it yet but i’m not hopeful. I think I got it right by myself.
- I did a complete format of the phone yesterday. Curiously this did not revive the camera function that went dead after I installed the Mail for Exchange program. Nokia Support told me I have to send it in for service.
I will make a new attempt after I get my phone back from service.. until then. If any of you reading this got it working, post a comment!

Hi,
I bought this phone for using VOIP functionality. I installed nokia VOIP Setting
software (versin 3.0) and I could see that on entering any phone number, I get “Net Call” option in one corner of the screen and selecting the option tries to register with the SIP server.
Try installing VOIP setting software.

I’m very interested to know if you’ll get this to work as I’m considering to get this phone myself and VOIP connection to a generic SIP provider is important for me.
The Nokia SIP VoIP Settings Application might help you. You’ll find it @ http://www.forum.nokia.com/Tools_Docs_and_Code/Tools/Plug-ins/Enablers/SIP_VoIP_Settings_application.xhtml
You’ll need to register, but it’s free.
Please let me (and others) know how it goes.
Here’s also some guide from Nokia, but I guess this is not new for you.

I wrote some comments here to aid you in enabling VOIP on you Nokia 5630, but now they’ve disappeared. What happened?
Hey seron! Thanks for the help! I just need to approve new commenters, now you are free to spam here forever
Here is the progress so far:
I applied SIP Settings version 3 as prompted by yasinag above and by a second letter from Nokia support. No change: I could, just as before enter my SIP settings and be detected from my SIP suppliers webpage, but still get “IP Telephony service not available.”
Before I try anything else I am going to do a complete wipe and reinstall of this phone, install everything again and then try the same instructions. Watch this space!

Ja det är så mycket fel att man blir helt matt. De vägrar förstå att inställningarna jag har funkar.
I hope you do press on with your investigation Martin. Nokia made it so complicated it’s a daunting task. Nevertheless, some people in the Nokia official forum claim it works with the N86 and E52, which are contemporary with the 5630. The E52 share almost all its characteristics with the 5630.
Here are the links:
E52:

There have been some developments since last time. After my reinstall of the phone I took a different approach and went and installed the Nokia-supported Gizmo VOIP solution. And it worked right away! Just as I suspected there was an entire step missing from my previous attempts, namely a dialog prompting me to “Activate Gizmo VOIP Service”. After doing this I now have “Internet Call” as an option for all my contacts.
From what I can gather the Gizmo installer does the following:
* Activates (provides?) the VOIP service on the phone.
* Auto-configures, with the help of a short wizard, the SIP settings on the phone related to the Gizmo network. Gizmo now appears as a profile in the standard SIP settings on the phone. Sipgate is in there as well and they can both be registered to their respective networks at the same time.
* LOCKS the SIP calls to the Gizmo profile. Even selecting sipgate as the standard profile does nothing, it only uses the Gizmo profile. Using Gizmo I have nobody to test with, so I have only listened to some test numbers, but they work fine!
So that’s that. On a side note I also checked out Skype Lite, and its a complete joke. It’s not VOIP at all but calls a landline number to connect to the skype network. Very disturbing.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to setting up VoIP on E and N-series. It’s for N79 and N85 among others.

I found this which is even more detailed instructions for the N85 and Nokias VOIP settings fields.

Congratulation. I am trying since I bought the phone in June to use VoIP. I got the same answers from Nokia (but in Norwegian for me
).
I got somehow the advise to install Fring on the phone. I did it with no success.
Where do you get the “Nokia-supported Gizmo VOIP solution”?
yasinag have installed nokia VOIP Setting software (versin 3.0). I did the same but still don’t have “Internet Call” as an option for my contacts.
Thanks
I recently acquired this phone and got all this working. It’s possible to call over UMTS and WiFi without third party software. It’s possible to set the phone to prioritise WiFi over UMTS.
Hey Seron!
I would love a step-by-step on how you did it. And what provider did you go for?
Hi Martin.
There are posts in this thread that outlines the settings. As for prioritising, you can set it in Setting/Connections/Network destinations.
http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=communicators&thread.id=45590
Did you get it working Martin?
I’m using JustVoip, but I guess all the Betamax providers work the same.
No not yet, I’m sorry to say that my Nokia is in the shop again for a very annoying problem: any update of any kind kills the camera function.. It’s possible that my device was faulty from the start that that is the reason why this seemed so difficult. I’ll give it a shot again in 2 weeks when i have my phone back. Thanks for the support Seron
Finally!! Got the phone from service and got sip working just as intended. Your forum link worked perfectly. Now I’m going to try the same on my dads phone and see if we can get some videocalls going. Thanks Seron and enjoy the 5630!
“skype for nokia 5630 when well be ready”
Nice blog here. I love Nokia phones. I just read that Nokia has officially anounced Nokia C6 and the Nokia X5. Those are both TD-SCDMA handsets which only work in China on TD-SCDMA network. The Nokia X5 will offer you a 5-megapixel camera, dual LED flash and video recording, 2.4-inch QVGA display, access to MM-Ovi Store, mobile video, Fetion IM, Mobile Map/Navigation and it will be available in black, white and red in Q2 2010. All the best Dominick Shafer.
For me, Nokia is the best mobile phone brand. It has easy operation and high durability. The music quality is good. Thank you so much for the information.
