Simon the great

IMG_1938

I just wanted to share this photo of Simon with you. It’s from our visit today to the eye doctors in Stockholm where Aron tested his eyes. Aron did very well indeed on the tests and will now officially make the move from contact lenses to normal glasses. It is going to feel very strange to suddenly stop  the daily struggle with him to wear the contact lenses, but we know that he will appreciate the change.

This also means that today was our last visit to St Eriks barnsjukhus, they have tended to Arons ocular needs for the first part of his life, he got his first contact lens prescription here at the age of two months. Thanks for everything!

Simon now weights 7.6 kg and is 63 cm tall. Not bad for someone just turning2.5 months old!

The week in review

Another week zipped by, a very social one this time. While I was away in Sundsvall for a work conference we had visits from K and A, and we promise you that there will come a time when coming here wont be like a huge work-camp for you guys! Thanks for all the help. A & C also payed us a visit and we hope they had a good visit in the big city.

Aron had a rather nasty accident on thursday when he managed to tilt our bar-cupboard on top of himself and one of the mirrors broke. He cut his face, but thankfully needed no stiches. We got quick and professional help and he is now back to his former self, but now with stories about “Erik” the nurse who helped him. He also wants to clean our faces and put band-aids on them, hopefully soon he will be back to 100%.

Simon is doing great, growing like crazy! Yesterday is his date to get weighted and measured, it’s going to be interesting to see what his stats are, he already feels like he is approaching Valentina in size,

New week, new possibilities

It has been another nice weekend in the Bergström Gumucio house.

On Friday we rented and saw Che: Part one. And it was an absolute snooze-cruise. You would think that setting up a revolution would make for a better movie. But sadly it fails on all counts, the action is on a low scale, the acting is shallow and it didn’t even explain the historic parts all that well.

Saturdays main event was the wedding party for friends E and L. At the castle! Amazing food, lots to drink. African dancing. Silly party hats, ears and eyes… You had to be there. We were talk

Sunday was all about home renovation. With Aron safely tucked away at this grandma, we had the time to get some stuff done that was long overdue. Got some shelves up by the tv, got rid of the old wardrobe.. got the new one from the storage place.. a very productive day.

Aron and Simon are doing great and getting along together nicely. More pics of the little ones are to come, I promise!

Goodnight sweet prince

First of all, to all parents that has kids that sleep normally. Be thankful for the blessing you have recieved! When I talk to friends that tell me their kids have always gone to sleep at 8pm and then slept peacefully to 8am I am always undecided if I should congratulate them or give them a punch in the face.

I’m starting to write this at 20.20 after putting little prince Aron to sleep. All his life he has been suffering from insomnia of some kind, making both himself and us suffer the consequences. So this weekend we took it upon ourselves to try to change this behaviour.  Since we have a second little baby coming in just a few weeks this is a “now or never” type of situation.

Midsummers in Nora

Nora!  City of summer.  For us city-dwellers every year we come here it’s like balsam for your soul. We always sleep a lot more when we are here, eat extremely well, and Aron loves the house with all the toy cars in.

This years midsummers celebration was to be held at the Pershyttan. Old remnants of the iron-industry that these parts were famous for in the 17th century. It all started in the most swedish way possible. Pouring rain! Thankfully the sun decided to join us later.

Later in the day we took a guided tour of Lockgruvan, a mine in the same area that went into disuse in 1909. Lina tells me that the area around the mine-shaft used to be completely unprotected, which  is totally amazing to me. The shaft is 160 meters deep, at 100 meters down the water starts. Or as it were, the ice!  Even in midsummer the ice is thick, and the temperature way below zero.

Learning the fate of the people that worked in the mine makes us visitors grateful to not have been among their numbers. There were no unions and no organization among the workers, its only in the economic books of the company that you can learn how life might have been like, the following is an authentic quote from the ledgers of the iron company.

Today worker Sune Magnusson died of a “skut” (piece of rock falling from the cieling). He leaves behind widow and seven children in misery. The cost was 33 crowns. (funeral)

The guide could also tell us that there is a continued recorded history of the same family. Luckily for the family, they had a 15 year old son that could take his fathers place at the company. Had this not been the case the family would not only have lost their only source of income, but also the house. It also belonged to the company. The son died in a train accident a few years later, breaking the rules by leaving the mine by walking on the railway he was hit by a railway cart loaded with minerals from behind. By that time he had probably already lost all hearing and so was unable to hear the cart coming.

These sobering accounts on how the situation for the working man used to be, makes you all the more thankful for lazy summer days. Were “working hard” simply means  having to be indoors.

Happy midsummers to you, and I hope you get lots of great vacation!
